Flying Buttresses
BACK UP FORWARD

Flying Buttresses

Dear WORLD MEMORIAL, I am excited to submit the attached sketch for the WTC/Ground Zero Memorial.

By way of explanation, I envision the memorial to consist of one big building, having two towers.  The towers would be office buildings, with the ground floor serving as a museum memorializing September 11.  The one building would symbolize unity, and the two towers extending upward would symbolize the original twin towers, yet be functional as offices. Flying buttresses extending from the sides of the building would appear to look like ladders. The building would be situated on a three-step circle of stone/marble, each step having the names of those who died who worked in the buildings. The rest of ground zero would be a park with a statue of the firemen and policemen and a police dog in the middle of the park.  Around the base of the statue would be the names of those firemen and policemen who lost their lives.  The opposite end of the circle would have sculptures of the planes that went down as well as flag poles.  On that part of the circle would be the names of those who lost their lives in the planes.  The rest of the park could have benches.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to submit my vision.  I can only hope that the ultimate design will be one that vividly expresses America’s sorrow as well as America’s strength.

Sincerely,

Twiggy Munford
